I was very excited today to receive a large envelope in the mail today containing (inside a thick, back plastic pocket) a set of Lisa Benson’s ‘disappearing drawings’. I met Lisa recently at a symposium discussion at RMIT, and she offered to send me some. If you don’t know her work, here is an article that explains.
Of course, they have thrown me into a quandry. When I first received them I displayed them proudly in my lounge room… before realising that the black plastic pocket functioned to slow down the disappearance of the image. Displaying them would mean less time to enjoy them, but putting them back in the black plastic meant I could only enjoy the idea of them, and the occasional sacrificial glance. Hmmm. So, I took a photo of each of them. Yes, I thought, I have a record of them now, so I can leave them out, and enjoy both their material presence and their gradual disappearance. Quickly, however, I chickened out and put them back in their black plastic envelope, feeling I needed more time to consider just how fast I wanted them to disappear, or not. That’s where I’m at with them at this moment. Here are pics of 2 of them on my gritty timber corridor floor (where the light for a photo was best at the time):
